In my post on potty training tips and tricks, I mentioned how you will need a good cleaner when dealing with animal messes. In this article, I will list things to look for in an effective cleaner, a small list of recommended products, and a brief explanation of why dogs tend to relieve themselves in similar locations.
When a dog eliminates or relieves itself, not only is waste released, but a pheromone is released as well. Those pheromones are a dog's calling card with all their vital information. An example would be the pheromones an unspayed female may release, telling male suitors she is in heat. A male dog may mark his territory, telling other dogs to back off and leave. There are a variety of pheromones and their uses, but the main thing is that all dogs use them and all dogs can smell them. It is important to know the purpose of pheromones and to know that those pheromones act as a neon sign. Dogs are pulled back to those scents you and I can't smell, and want to leave their calling card. When it is inside the house, they will gravitate to the last place they sensed those smells.
The unfortunate part about pheromones is that they are difficult to erase. When cleaning up dog messes, you need to purchase the correct cleaner. If not, the smell and the stain are eliminated, but not the pheromone. An enzyme-based cleaner will be your best bet to break down those odors in a way typical cleaners can't. Some people try to use vinegar or ammonia-based cleaners, but the humane society warns that it may encourage your dog to remark that location to combat that potent smell.
After some research, I have compiled a list of cleaners with fantastic results and reviews.
Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator
Nature's Miracle Dog Stain and Odor Remover
OxiClean Carpet & Area Rug Pet Stain & Odor Remover
Angry Orange Odor Eliminator
Rocco & Roxie Stain and Odor Eliminator is a dog and cat cleaner and is safe for use around pets and kids.
Nature's Miracle Dog Stain and Odor Remover has separate dog and cat cleaners but is considered to be safe around your pets. It is highly effective in removing the stain, smells, and pheromones. People have stated that they enjoy the cleaner's smell.
OxiClean Carpet & Area Rug Pet Stain & Odor Remover has reviews stating that it is effective and helpful in cleaning up pet accidents. It works quickly in cleaning up messes.
Angry Orange Odor Eliminator has wonderful reviews about its smell and effectiveness, but many find the bottle to be difficult to refill and use.
Most of these will be at your local pet store, but if not Amazon will be able to help you purchase them.
